JanitorAI down? How to keep your story going

Updated

If JanitorAI pages won't load at all, the site is down and only waiting fixes it. If pages load but replies fail, the site is fine and your model or proxy is the problem. While you wait, carry on elsewhere: your proxy key works in other apps, and on UnsavedAI you can paste your own bot and a recap into /chat/custom. Afterwards, keep copies of bots and chat memory.

Site down or proxy down?

These feel the same from the chat box but have completely different fixes. A two-minute check:

  • Does the JanitorAI home page load and show your bots? If not, the site is down, or blocked on your network.
  • If it loads, open a chat and send "hi". An error code or "Failed to fetch" means the site is fine and the model behind it is the problem.
  • On JLLM, try switching that chat to a proxy if you have one, or the other way round. If one works, the other was the trouble.
  • Try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or a second browser. If it works there, it was your network or an extension, not an outage.
  • Search for other people reporting it right now. Many reports at once means everyone is affected.

If it turns out to be your proxy, start with 5xx proxy errors or Failed to fetch.

Keep playing during the outage

Your story does not have to wait for the site. Three ways to keep going, from closest to furthest:

  • Same model, different app: a proxy key is not tied to JanitorAI. Paste it into SillyTavern or another chat app and keep the same model; see one account across many apps.
  • Your bot on UnsavedAI: if you have a copy of a bot you made, or one whose definition was visible, paste it into /chat/custom and open with a recap. It runs in any browser with no download.
  • Something new: try a house character for one evening, such as Sigrun, who arrives to carry you off and finds you are not finished yet.

A recap to open with, filled in from your own story:

(OOC: Continuing a story from elsewhere. {{user}} and Nikos escaped the gala with the stolen seating chart; Nikos is wounded and furious that {{user}} lied about the buyer. We are in a borrowed car outside the city at 2 a.m. Pick up there.)

Copies that make outages harmless

An outage is a bad moment to discover your story only exists in one place. Once the site is back, spend ten minutes saving:

  • Every bot you made: personality, scenario, initial message, example dialogs, and the avatar if it is yours.
  • Bots by others that you love and whose definition is visible, for personal use with the creator credited. Moving a JanitorAI bot explains how.
  • The chat memory text of each story you care about.
  • A three-sentence recap of where each story stands.
  • Your persona text, and your proxy URL and model name. Keep the key itself in a password manager, not a notes file.

On UnsavedAI, a bot you rebuild in the builder can be downloaded as a Character Card V2 file or as text for JanitorAI, so one copy works in every app.

When JanitorAI comes back

Reload the page fully rather than reusing an old tab, and check your proxy configuration is still selected; send a short test before a long message. Resist resending everything at once, since thousands of people doing that is often why a site stays slow after an outage.

If you carried a story on elsewhere, bring it home by adding what happened to the chat memory and opening with an OOC recap. Writing that memory well is covered in JanitorAI chat memory.

Questions people ask

How do I know if JanitorAI is down for everyone?

If the home page will not load on two networks and many people are reporting it at the same time, it is down for everyone. Waiting is the only fix for the site itself.

Will I lose my chats when JanitorAI is down?

An outage usually means the site is unreachable for a while, not that chats are deleted. Keeping your own copies of bots, chat memory and recaps means you lose nothing either way.

Does my proxy key still work while JanitorAI is down?

Yes. The key belongs to your provider, not to JanitorAI, so it works in any app that supports that provider.
