Looking for a JanitorAI alternative? Decide what to replace

Updated

JanitorAI pairs a large library of community characters with the option to connect a proxy or API key for the model. So first decide what you actually want to change: the characters and site, or just the model writing the replies. UnsavedAI covers both: house characters you can play in your browser, and an API key you can plug into JanitorAI if you only want a different model.

Work out what you are replacing

People say "JanitorAI alternative" for two quite different problems. One is the site: the browsing, the characters, the way chats work. The other is the model: how the replies read, how fast they come and what they remember. On JanitorAI those two are separate, because you can connect your own model through a proxy.

If you like the characters and the site but not the replies, you may not need to leave at all. Changing the model can make the same character feel very different.

If it is the model

Connect a different OpenAI-compatible API in JanitorAI's proxy settings and keep everything else. How the JanitorAI proxy works explains the fields, and the JanitorAI guide walks through connecting a UnsavedAI key.

A UnsavedAI key works with the models gemma-4-12b on every plan and gemma-4-31b on Priority, with a context of about 61,000 tokens. Keys are made at /setup. Generation settings matter as much as the model, so read JanitorAI generation settings before judging the result.

If it is the site

Then you want somewhere with characters that are written well and a chat that holds a long story. On UnsavedAI there are 90+ house characters across romance, fantasy, horror, mystery, cozy and more, each with a personality, scenario, greeting, example dialogue and suggested first moves. It runs in the browser, and your first messages need no account.

You can also make your own at /chat/custom and import SillyTavern or Chub cards as PNG or JSON.

Moving characters both ways

  • Bringing one over: copy its personality, scenario and first message into the custom character form, or import its card file if you have one.
  • Taking one back: export any character you made as text for JanitorAI, or as a Character Card V2 file for SillyTavern.
  • Only move characters you made, or ones whose creators are happy for them to be shared.

Because nothing is locked in, you can try both setups for a week and keep whichever stories you enjoy more.

A fair test

Pick one character you know well and play the same opening in both places, with the same first three messages. Then plant a detail, such as a name or an object, and bring it back thirty messages later. Compare how each reply sounds, whether the character stays in voice, and whether the detail survives. That tells you more than any feature list.

Questions people ask

Can I use UnsavedAI inside JanitorAI?

Yes. Make an API key at /setup and enter it in JanitorAI's proxy settings; the JanitorAI guide shows each field.

Will my JanitorAI characters work elsewhere?

If you can see their personality, scenario and first message, you can recreate them in any site that accepts custom characters.

Which model should I pick for roleplay?

Start with gemma-4-12b, which every plan includes. Priority adds gemma-4-31b, a larger model that tends to handle long, layered scenes better.
