How to continue a long AI roleplay without losing it
Updated
To continue a long roleplay, keep the story saved, refresh its memory notes, and re-enter with a message that reminds the character where things stand. When a story has grown past what the model can see, start a new chapter with a short recap. On UnsavedAI, saved stories open on any device, and New journey starts a fresh chapter with the same character.

Stories you save to your account open where you left them, on phone or desktop. Unsaved stories stay in the browser you used. Before your first new message, open Story memory (⋯ menu) and read it: it is a quick reminder for you too, and the place to fix anything that has drifted.
Then re-enter with an action that touches the last scene, not a cold "hi again": *I'm back on the sea wall at nine, like I said I'd be. The letter is still in my pocket.* The callback tells the character exactly what thread you are picking up.
When the story has grown too long
Every model can only read so much at once, so in very long stories the opening chapters fall out of view. The chat shows roughly how many recent messages the character can see. If key scenes are far beyond that, it is time for a chapter break rather than pushing on.
Signs it is time: the character forgets names that matter, contradicts early events, or the story keeps circling the same beats. Making AI remember your story explains the memory side in detail.
Start a new chapter with a recap
With a character open, choose New journey from the ⋯ menu. It starts a fresh story with the same character, and Your journeys keeps every previous one to return to. Name each journey so you can find it. Then open with Start your own way, or as your first message, using a recap like this:
Where we are: Six weeks into summer in Brightwater Cove. Sophie and I talk again; we have not talked about the fight. What changed: She showed up in the storm when the freezers failed. I found the letter she never sent. What's unresolved: Whether I tell her I read it. She is selling the shop at the end of August. Tonight: The end-of-season fireworks on the pier.
Four short lines carry a long story into a fresh one. Copy the most important bullets from the old Story memory into the new one as well.
Keep a copy
Download this story (⋯ menu) saves the whole conversation as a Markdown file you can open in any text editor, handy before a chapter break or just to keep. Characters you made yourself can be exported as Character Card V2 for SillyTavern or as text for JanitorAI, so the character travels with you too.
Keeping a long story fresh
Long stories sag in the middle. Each new chapter is a chance to change one thing: a new place, a time skip, a new person in town, a secret coming out. Opening the next journey a week later in story time, with a new problem waiting, often feels better than picking up the exact minute you left. If the voice has drifted over hundreds of messages, see keeping characters in character.
Questions people ask
Will a new journey remember the old one?
Bring the important facts across yourself: a recap in your first message and the key lines in Story memory. That gives the character a clean, accurate start.
Can I continue a story from Character.AI or another app?
Write a recap like the one above and send it as your first message to the same character here. Moving a Character.AI character covers bringing the character itself.
Do saved stories expire?
A saved story stays on your account until you unsave it or delete your account.
