AI roleplay on your phone: no app download needed

Updated

You can roleplay with AI characters on a phone straight from the browser: open the site, pick a character and type, with nothing to install from an app store. To make it feel like an app, add it to your home screen from the browser's menu. UnsavedAI works this way on iPhone and Android, and stories saved to your account carry on from your computer too.

Try it now, free, no account neededStart a story with Bex DunmoreYour best friend just turned up at 2 a.m. with a shopping trolley, a goose and a plan to fix your life.

Start in the browser

Open the site in the browser you already use, Safari on an iPhone or Chrome on most Android phones, and pick a character from the gallery. Your first messages need no account, so you can see whether a story grabs you before signing up. When you want to keep going, a free account takes a moment, and the story carries on where you left it.

Late at night is when a lot of phone roleplay happens, and some characters are written for exactly that hour: Bex Dunmore, your best friend turning up at 2 a.m. with a shopping trolley, or Vani, a night nurse at 3 a.m. in an ER waiting room.

Add it to your home screen

A home-screen icon opens the site full screen, without the browser's address bar, so it looks and feels like an app:

  • iPhone or iPad, in Safari: tap the Share button (the square with an arrow), scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.
  • Android, in Chrome: tap the three-dot menu and choose Add to Home screen or Install app, then confirm.

The exact wording shifts a little between browser versions, but it always lives in the share or main menu. Delete the icon like any other app icon if you change your mind; nothing else was installed.

Typing well on a small keyboard

Phone replies tend to shrink to one line, and short messages get short replies back. A few habits keep stories rich without thumb cramp:

  • Write one action and one line of dialogue. *I hand you the umbrella and keep walking.* "You'll need it more than me." That is plenty to answer.
  • Use your keyboard's microphone to dictate longer turns, then fix the odd word.
  • Make text shortcuts for things you type often. On an iPhone, Text Replacement in the keyboard settings can turn "ooc" into "(OOC: )"; most Android keyboards have a similar shortcut feature.
  • Turn the phone sideways when you want to reread a long reply with fewer line breaks.

Writing better replies has more on getting a lot of story out of a few words.

Moving between phone and computer

Stories are saved to your account by default, so you can start on the sofa with your phone and continue at a desk later: sign in on both and the story is there. A story you switch to Unsaved isn't kept in your account, so it won't follow you to another device. Your About you description (⋯ menu) is kept in each browser, so paste it once on each device you use.

Privacy on a shared phone

A home-screen icon is visible to anyone who unlocks the phone, so skip it on a shared device and use a private browsing tab instead. For a story you would rather not keep at all, switch it to Unsaved. Private AI roleplay explains what is kept and what isn't.

If you also use apps like JanitorAI or SillyTavern, a key from /setup works with them from a phone browser as well, and one account across many apps shows how people split one account between them. Running SillyTavern itself is a bigger job; SillyTavern for beginners explains what it involves.

Questions people ask

Is there a UnsavedAI app in the App Store or Google Play?

No download is needed. It runs in the phone's browser, and adding it to your home screen gives you an app-style icon.

Do I need an account to try it on my phone?

No. Your first messages work without one; a free account lets you keep going and save stories.

Can I continue a phone story on my laptop?

Yes, if the story is saved to your account. Sign in on the laptop and open it from there.
