- Read the greeting: it sets the scene and usually ends on something to react to.
- Reply in character, or tap one of the suggested first moves if you are not sure what to say.

Make the first messages count
A handful of messages is plenty to tell whether a character works for you, if you use them well. Give the character something concrete to react to instead of "hi".
- With The Narrator: "A lighthouse keeper, a storm, and a knock on the door at 3 a.m. I am the keeper. Begin."
- With Grimm the Dungeon Master: "I am a disgraced knight with one good arm and a debt to a thieves' guild. Start me in a tavern."
- With Silas Crane: "I slide a wet photograph across your desk. 'She has been missing three days. The police say she left on her own.'"

When an account is worth it
Make a free account when you want to keep going past the first messages, or to save a story and continue it on another device. Saved stories stay in your account; you can also keep any story Unsaved if you would rather it was not kept.
The free lane uses Gemma 4 12B with about 61,000 tokens of context. If you later want the larger Gemma 4 31B model and no queue at busy times, the Priority lane is $4.99 a month. Nothing about trying first commits you to that.
Quick tips for a fair first try
- Try two very different characters, say one cozy and one dark, before deciding.
- Mention a small detail early and see whether it comes back later.
- Write a couple of sentences per message; the replies match your effort.
- If a reply misses, regenerate it rather than giving up on the character.
You can write in your own language: characters reply in the language you use. And if none of the 90+ house characters fits, you can make your own at /chat/custom once you are ready.
