How to set up a JanitorAI proxy on your phone

Updated

On a phone, a JanitorAI proxy takes the same three values as on a computer: URL, key and model. Make the key on the phone itself so you can copy it straight across, paste each value with long-press, and watch for autocapitalise and smart dashes changing the model name. Save, reload the page and send "hi". With UnsavedAI, the Setup page has copy buttons for every value.

Get the values onto the phone safely

The hard part on mobile is moving a long key between apps without mangling or leaking it. The cleanest way is to make it on the phone: sign in to your provider in the phone's browser, create a key there and copy it from the same screen.

Avoid sending a key to yourself in a chat app or email. Those messages sync to other devices, sit in backups and are easy to forward by accident. A password manager is the right place if you need it on several devices. On UnsavedAI, make the key at Setup and copy it from Your keys; the proxy URL and model name have copy buttons on the same page.

The steps in a phone browser

  • Open JanitorAI in your phone's browser, sign in and open any chat.
  • Open the chat's settings. On a narrow screen they often sit behind a menu icon rather than in a side panel.
  • Choose Proxy as the provider and add a new proxy configuration.
  • Paste the proxy URL, the key and the model name into their fields.
  • Save, then reload the page: pull down from the top or tap the browser's reload button.
  • Go back to the chat and send a one-word message.

Exact labels can change between versions; every field is described in the JanitorAI connection guide, and what each value means is in what a proxy is in JanitorAI.

Phone keyboards that break proxies

Most mobile proxy failures come from the keyboard, not the provider: - Autocapitalise turns gemma-4-12b into Gemma-4-12b, and the provider no longer recognises the name. - Smart punctuation can turn a hyphen into a dash that looks almost identical. If a model name looks right but fails, delete it and paste it instead of typing. - Some keyboards add a space after pasting. A trailing space on a key or URL is invisible and fatal. - Copying from a page that shows a masked key, like sk-...abcd, copies the dots, not the key. - Autofill can drop a saved password into the key field. Check the field before saving.

The safest habit: long-press the field, choose select all, then paste over it. Never edit a key by hand on a small screen.

Keeping it working on mobile

  • Stay on the tab until the reply finishes. Phones pause background tabs to save battery, and switching apps mid-reply can cut it off.
  • Battery saver and data saver modes can interrupt long replies too. Try once with them off if replies stop halfway.
  • Browsers with a built-in tracker or ad blocker sometimes stop requests to a provider's domain. Turn the blocker off for JanitorAI as a test.
  • If you set the proxy up on your computer first and it does not appear on your phone, add it on the phone too and reload.

If a message fails outright, the error text names the cause: see Failed to fetch or 401 Unauthorized.

If you lose the phone

A key saved in a browser on a lost phone still works for whoever has the phone. Revoke it from another device straight away and make a new one; on UnsavedAI, revoking under Your keys stops it in every app at once, and your other keys keep working. Separate keys per app and per device make this painless.

And if all you want is to play on your phone without a proxy at all, the UnsavedAI site itself runs in a mobile browser and can be added to your home screen.

Questions people ask

Do I need a JanitorAI app to use a proxy on mobile?

No. The proxy settings work in an ordinary phone browser, the same as on a computer.

Why does my proxy work on my laptop but not my phone?

Usually a keyboard change in one field, such as a capital letter in the model name or a space after the key. Paste each value again with select all, save and reload.

Can I use the same key on my phone and computer?

Yes, but separate keys are safer: if one device is lost you can revoke its key without breaking the other.
