Private AI roleplay: how to keep your chats to yourself

Updated

For private AI roleplay, check three things: whether your chats are stored, who can read them, and whether you can keep a single story off the record. On UnsavedAI, each story can be saved to your account or kept Unsaved, we don't read or screen conversations, and traffic through API keys is never stored. Your own device habits matter just as much.

What private should mean

Privacy is not one switch. It is a few separate questions, and a service can be good on one and vague on another.

  • Storage: are your stories kept, and can you choose per story?
  • Access: does anyone read or review conversations?
  • Control: can you keep a story off your account entirely?
  • Clarity: is all of this written in a privacy policy you can actually read?

Questions to ask any service

Read the privacy policy of whatever you use, and look for plain answers rather than marketing. If a policy does not say whether conversations are read, assume they might be. If you cannot tell whether a story is stored, assume it is.

A service built for adults should also say clearly what is and is not allowed, because that tells you what, if anything, it looks for.

Steps on your side

  • Lock your phone and computer, and log out on shared devices.
  • Use a private browser window on a device other people use.
  • Keep real details out of fiction: no full names, addresses or workplaces in stories.
  • Be careful with screenshots, which outlive any setting.
  • Use a separate email for accounts you would rather keep apart.

One trade-off to know: a private browser window clears what the site keeps in your browser when you close it. That includes characters you brought over on the import page, so save a copy of their greeting and definition somewhere of your own first.

Saved or Unsaved: which to pick

Save a story when you want to come back to it, especially from a different device; a long romance or campaign is worth keeping. Keep a story Unsaved when it is a one-off, an experiment, or simply something you would rather not have on your account. You can make that choice story by story, so one does not decide the other.

How UnsavedAI handles it

Each story is either saved to your account, so you can pick it up on any device, or kept Unsaved, which keeps it off your account. You choose per story. We don't read or screen conversations, and API traffic from apps like SillyTavern or JanitorAI is never stored. The full details are in the privacy policy.

When you bring a Character.AI character over on the import page, the pasted character is kept in your browser rather than uploaded from that page. And you can send your first messages to a house character without an account at all.

Privacy and responsibility go together: because conversations are not screened, you are responsible for what you write, within the adult roleplay rules.
