Perchance AI chat alternative: stop losing your stories
Updated
Perchance is a free site of user-made generators, including AI character chat pages. A chat that needs no account can usually keep your story only in the browser you used, so clearing data or switching devices loses it. Keep a downloaded copy and a short recap, or play somewhere that saves to an account. UnsavedAI lets you start without one, and signing up carries that story into your account.

Without an account, a site has nowhere to keep your story except the browser you used. That copy is fragile:
- Clearing browsing data or site data wipes it.
- A private or incognito window forgets everything when it closes.
- Your phone and your laptop each hold their own copy, or none.
- Some browsers clear stored data for sites you have not opened in a while.
| Where the story lives | Closing the tab | Clearing site data | Opening on another device |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only in the browser | Usually kept | Lost | Not there |
| A file you downloaded | Kept | Kept | There if you move the file |
| Saved to an account | Kept | Kept | There |
None of this is a fault in one particular site; it is how browser storage works. The fix is a copy that does not live in the browser.
A 60-second save routine
Before closing a story you care about, wherever you play:
- Download or export the chat if the site offers it. If not, select all and paste it into a note.
- Copy the character's definition: name, personality, scenario and greeting.
- Write a five-line recap: where you are, who is present, what just happened, what is unresolved, and one detail you want back later.
- Name the file after the character and the date.
The recap is the step people skip and the one that saves them. Restarting from a 300-message transcript is a chore; restarting from five lines takes a minute.
Restarting from your copy
Paste the character's definition into a new character at /chat/custom, then open the story with your recap as the first message:
"(OOC: Continuing a story already in progress. Where we are: the night ferry, an hour out from the island. Who's here: just us, and a deckhand asleep below. What just happened: you admitted you sold the map. Unresolved: whether I forgive you, and who bought it. Remember: you're afraid of deep water. Pick up from here, in character.)"
Add the last two or three exchanges from your copy and the character settles back into its voice quickly. If you would rather not rebuild the character, the Narrator will play anyone you describe.
Starting here without an account
On UnsavedAI, your first messages to a house character need no account. A story started that way is kept in that browser, so coming back in the same browser finds it, but it is exactly as fragile as any browser copy. Make a free account and the story you were in comes with you; from then on stories are saved to your account by default, so they open on any device. Any single story can still be switched to Unsaved if you would rather it stayed off your account.
Download this story in the ⋯ menu works at any point too, so you can keep a file of your own alongside the saved copy. A good one to test it with: Georgie Pratt, who you met in a Hanoi hostel twelve hours ago and are somehow now travelling with.
Questions people ask
Is there an AI chat with no sign-up that still keeps my story?
Not across devices: an account is what lets a story follow you. On UnsavedAI you can start without one, and a free account keeps the story you were already in.
Can I move a Perchance character here?
Yes, if you have its text. Paste the name, personality, scenario and greeting into a new character at /chat/custom.
What should a recap include?
Where you are, who is present, what just happened, what is unresolved, and one detail you want to come back. Five lines is plenty.
