What the model changes in a mature story

Adult fiction asks a lot of a model. The character has to want something and keep wanting it, react to what you just did rather than to what usually happens next, and handle a slow build without rushing or going cold. A weaker model tends to slide into the same few phrases, agree to everything, and forget that the character was furious with you two scenes ago.

None of that is about how explicit a model is willing to be. It is about whether the person on the other side of the scene still feels like a person at message 150.

The two lanes side by side

The 12B model is quick and handles most one-on-one romance well. The 31B model has more room for subtext: a character who says one thing and means another, a scene with three people in it, jealousy that builds over several chapters. Is Gemma 4 good for roleplay? goes into the differences.

What 61,000 tokens buys an adult story

A token averages about three quarters of a word, so 61,000 tokens is roughly 45,000 words, and that budget includes the character's own description and the reply being written. In practice it covers the whole arc of most stories: the first meeting, the argument, the night everything changed and the awkward morning after, all in view at once.

That matters more in adult fiction than almost anywhere, because the payoff depends on setup. A line like "you still owe me for the casino" only lands if the model can still see the casino scene.

Run the same scene on both

The fairest test is one you write yourself. Pick a character, play the same opening on each model, and plant one detail in the first five messages: a rule, a promise or a lie. Then judge:

• Does the character bring the detail back unprompted?
• Does their voice hold, or drift into generic sweetness?
• When you push back, do they push back too?
• Across ten replies, how often do the same phrases repeat?

Jot notes as you go. After thirty messages the difference, or the lack of one, is usually obvious, and you will know whether the upgrade is worth it for the stories you actually write.
