The 12B model answers fast, which matters more in roleplay than people expect: a reply that starts in a couple of seconds keeps a scene flowing. It keeps a character's voice well for everyday stories, banter, romance and adventure, and it follows example dialogue closely, so a card with two or three good example messages goes a long way.
Where it shows its size is in tangled plots: many characters in one scene, secrets that must stay hidden for fifty messages, or subtle shifts in a relationship. It can flatten those, or resolve tension sooner than you wanted.
Gemma 4 31B: deep and thoughtful
The 31B model is the one to reach for with complex characters and long stories. It keeps motivations straighter, plays a slow burn with more patience, and handles a narrator juggling several people in a scene. Being larger, it can take a little longer to start a reply. Settings that suit Gemma

Gemma tends to follow instructions literally, so a short, clear card works better than a long list of rules. Describe how the character speaks, what they want and how they feel about you, and show it in example dialogue rather than stating it.
Getting the best out of either
Write the kind of reply you want back. Gemma mirrors your length and style: a one-line message gets a short reply, a paragraph with action and dialogue gets the same. If the character starts drifting, a quick out-of-character note in brackets usually steers it back without breaking the scene.
If replies repeat themselves, rewrite or swipe the first repeated reply rather than letting it stand; models copy their own recent patterns.
