What is a persona in AI roleplay?

Updated

A persona is the description of you, the player, that a roleplay app sends to the AI alongside the character card: your name, pronouns, appearance, personality and relationship to the character. It fills in {{user}} and lets the character react to who you are instead of to a blank stranger. In UnsavedAI it is the About you panel in a chat's menu.

What a persona does

Without a persona, the AI knows only what your messages say. It may guess your gender, invent your appearance, or call you "traveller" forever. A persona fixes that before the first reply. A short one is enough:

Name: Alex. He/him. Late twenties, tall, scar through one eyebrow, always in a battered leather jacket. Former royal courier, now freelance. Dry humour, hates being owed favours. Met Captain Elias Thorne once, years ago, and lost a bet to him.

With that, Captain Elias Thorne can recognise you, mention the scar and bring up the old bet, all without you saying it in the chat.

How apps use it

Apps put the persona into the prompt near the character card, and replace {{user}} in the card and greeting with your persona's name. Because it is read on every reply, it works like a small character card for you. SillyTavern and JanitorAI both let you save several personas and switch between them, so you can be a knight in one story and a detective in another.

Writing a good persona

  • Keep it short: 50 to 150 words. It is sent with every message.
  • Include what the character would notice: looks, voice, how you carry yourself.
  • State your relationship to them if the story depends on it: rival, old friend, new employee.
  • Leave room for discovery. Secrets you want to reveal in play are better kept out.

Common mistakes

  • Writing your persona as orders to the AI ("make everyone like me"). Describe yourself; let the story decide how people react.
  • Contradicting it in chat. If your persona says shy and every message is a bold speech, the model gets mixed signals.
  • Forgetting to update it when the story changes, for example after your character gets married or loses an arm.
  • Using the same persona everywhere when it names a relationship to one specific character.

Personas in UnsavedAI

In any UnsavedAI chat, open the ⋯ menu and choose About you. You can set your name and a short description: pronouns, looks, personality, backstory, who you are to them. Every character gets it from your next message, and it is kept in your browser. It pairs well with a story where your role matters, such as being Kael Ardent's rescuer or Adrian Vale's assistant who talks back.

Questions people ask

Is a persona the same as {{user}}?

{{user}} is the placeholder in cards that gets replaced by your persona's name. The persona is the full description behind it.

Do I need a persona?

No. Many stories work fine without one, especially if the scenario already defines your role. A persona helps most in long stories.
