Kindroid alternative: turn your companion into a character card
Updated
Kindroid is an app for building a personal AI companion. To bring that companion into story roleplay, or carry them between apps, rewrite their backstory as a character card: permanent facts in the description, how they talk in personality and example lines, and the present moment in the scenario and first message. On UnsavedAI those fields go into /chat/custom.

A companion's backstory is usually written as a relationship log: how you met, what they are like with you, things that happened between you. A character card splits the same information by job. One part is read as permanent truth, one part sets the voice, and one part decides where the very first scene starts. Paste the whole log into one box and the model may treat a memory from months ago as if it is happening right now.
So the work is sorting, not rewriting from scratch. Here is a full example.
The backstory, as people write it
Wren is a made-up companion, written the way a long-running companion backstory often looks:
"Wren is 31, a sound engineer who restores old radios in a flat above a launderette. We met when I brought her a broken cassette deck and she kept it for three weeks 'for testing'. She's dry, teases constantly, hates being thanked, and goes quiet when she's worried instead of saying so. Her brother stopped speaking to her two years ago and she pretends it doesn't matter. She calls me 'trouble'. Last month we drove to the coast and she admitted she doesn't like the sea, she just likes the drive. She hums when she's concentrating."
The same companion, sorted into fields
| Field | What goes in it, for Wren |
|---|---|
| Name | Wren |
| One line about them | Sound engineer who restores old radios and hates being thanked |
| Who they are | 31, sound engineer, flat above a launderette. Estranged from her brother for two years and pretends it doesn't matter. Dislikes the sea, loves long drives. Has known {{user}} since they brought her a broken cassette deck. |
| Personality and voice | Dry, teasing, short sentences. Deflects thanks with a joke. Goes quiet instead of admitting worry. Hums while working. Calls {{user}} "trouble". |
| Where it starts | A rainy evening in Wren's workshop. A parcel came today in her brother's handwriting, and she hasn't opened it. |
| Their first message | *A radio lies in pieces on the bench. Wren doesn't look up.* "You're dripping on my schematics, trouble. Towel's on the hook. Don't ask about the box." |
| Example lines | Wren: "Don't thank me. It makes my teeth itch." / Wren: *hums off-key, then stops* "...What? I wasn't." |
Notice what moved where. The coast trip became two facts, dislikes the sea and loves the drive, instead of a memory to replay. The brother turned from backstory into a live problem in the scenario, which gives the first scene somewhere to go. And the nickname sits in the voice field, so she actually uses it.
What to leave out
- Long memory logs. Keep the three or four that shape who they are; the rest belong in the story itself.
- Instructions about you, like "always be supportive". Describe behaviour instead: "teases when she's fond, goes quiet when she's worried".
- Your own looks and job. Put those in your opening message, or in a persona if your app has one.
- Anything private you would not want on a card someone else might read, if you ever plan to share it.
If filling fields from a blank page feels like a lot, the studio at /chat/custom can draft a character from one line, which you then correct with the details only you know.
Keeping the closeness in a story
A card turns a companion into a character with a life of their own, which is what makes story roleplay work. If what you love is the ongoing closeness, keep one story going and keep coming back to it: on UnsavedAI the bond level grows as a story goes on, and stories are saved to your account by default. Replika alternative for roleplay covers the companion-to-story shift in more depth.
For a ready-made version of that feeling, Sorrel Avery is your partner of five years on the night you had the worst day, and they have already put the kettle on. Kian Rostami is two years of voice notes and shared tracks, and his visa has finally come through.
Questions people ask
Can I import a companion directly from another app?
Only if that app gives you a standard character card file. Otherwise copy the details out by hand and sort them into fields, as in the Wren example.
Where do new memories go once the story starts?
When you are signed in, Story memory in the ⋯ menu holds facts the character should keep to as the story grows. Use it for things that change, like where you live now or what you promised.
Will the character be the same person?
Close, not identical. A different model phrases things its own way, so the example lines matter most: two or three lines in their real voice do more than a long description.
