Why are Character.AI replies so slow? Causes and fixes
Updated
Slow replies usually come from busy hours on the service, a long reply or conversation, or your own connection. Try a different network, refresh, and play at quieter times of day. If waiting is the problem, look for a service that tells you how its queue works: on UnsavedAI the free lane can wait at busy times, and the Priority lane skips the queue for $4.99 a month.

Every reply is written by a model running on graphics cards that many people share. When lots of people chat at once, requests wait their turn, and even a fast model feels slow. That is why the same character can reply instantly at breakfast and crawl late in the evening.
Length matters too. A long reply takes longer to write than a short one, and a very long conversation gives the model more to read before it starts. Neither is a fault; they are the cost of rich, detailed replies.
Fixes on your side
- Check your connection: switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or move closer to the router.
- Refresh if a reply has been stuck for a long time; it may have stalled rather than slowed.
- Close other tabs or apps that stream video or download in the background.
- Try quieter hours. Early mornings and weekday afternoons are often calmer than evenings.
- Keep your own messages focused. A clear prompt tends to get a tighter, quicker reply.
When slow is the service
If everyone is reporting slow replies at the same time, it is load on the service and nothing on your side will fix it. Waiting it out, or playing at a different time, is the honest answer. If it is slow and failing, see what to do when Character.AI is down.
Slow and stuck are different. A slow reply arrives in the end; a stuck one never does. If nothing has appeared after a minute or two, refresh and send again rather than waiting. Copy your message first, so a long paragraph is not lost.
Make waiting hurt less
Long, detailed replies are often why people love roleplay, so the aim is not always the fastest answer. A few habits make the wait feel shorter: write your next move while the reply is coming, keep a scene moving with one clear action per message, and save slower, heavier scenes for quieter hours. A short exchange of dialogue flows better than one giant paragraph each way.
How UnsavedAI handles waiting
UnsavedAI is open about the trade-off. The free lane uses Gemma 4 12B, and at busy times free requests can wait behind paid ones. The Priority lane costs $4.99 a month, skips that queue and adds the larger Gemma 4 31B model. The details are on pricing and in free vs Priority.
If you connect SillyTavern, JanitorAI or another app with an API key, the free plan writes one reply at a time and Priority writes two, which matters if you like to swipe for alternatives. Setup is at /setup.
Questions people ask
Why are AI replies slower at night?
Evenings are when the most people chat, so requests queue up on shared hardware. The same reply is often much quicker at a quieter hour.
Does a longer chat make replies slower?
It can. The model reads the conversation before writing, so a very long story gives it more to process before the first words appear.
Is the free lane on UnsavedAI slow?
Usually not, but at busy times free requests can wait behind Priority ones. Priority skips the queue for $4.99 a month.
