How to start an AI roleplay (and what to send first)
Updated
Read the character's greeting, then answer it in character with three things: something you do, something you say, and one detail the character can react to. That is enough to start any AI roleplay. On UnsavedAI you can also tap one of the suggested first moves under the greeting, ask for a different opening, or write your own starting scene.

The greeting is the character's first move. It sets the place, the mood and usually a small problem. When Mara Vell opens, she has already noticed your soaked cloak and the glance you threw back at the street. That glance is the hook: she is asking, without asking, who is following you.
Before you type, pick out the one thing in the greeting that wants an answer. Replying to that keeps the story moving from the first line instead of resetting it.
The three-part first message
A first message that works has an action, a line of speech and a detail. The action shows who you are, the speech answers the greeting, and the detail gives the character something new to pick up.
Too thin: "hi" Better: *I shake the rain off and drop two silver on the bar, keeping my back to the wall.* "The room's fine. And I'd rather not say who's out there." *A folded letter slips from my sleeve before I catch it.*
The second version tells Mara you are wary, paying, and hiding something, and the letter hands her a reason to talk. Two or three sentences is plenty. You do not need a paragraph to start well.
Ready-made openers you can adapt
- For a mystery, with Silas Crane: *I sit down without being asked.* "My sister disappeared three days ago. The police already closed the file."
- For a reunion story, with Sophie Lane: *I lean on the counter, not quite meeting her eyes.* "Mint chip. Obviously."
- For anything at all, with the Narrator: "A lighthouse that isn't on any map. I'm the new keeper, and I just found someone else's footprints."
Every house character shows three suggested first moves under the greeting. Tap one if you are stuck, then add a sentence of your own so the story starts with your voice in it.
Choose or write the opening scene
Many characters have more than one opening. Before you send anything, the ⋯ menu offers Different opening, which swaps the greeting for another scene with the same character. If none of them fit, Start your own way lets you describe where the story begins in a sentence or two, for example "We've been married ten years and just had our worst fight." The character then opens from there.
If you want the character to know who you are before the first reply, fill in About you in the same menu. Our persona guide covers what to put there.
Your first five messages
Openings set habits. If your first few messages are short, replies tend to stay short; if you add one concrete detail each turn, the character starts doing the same. Spend the first five messages establishing who you are and what you want in this scene, and the rest of the story has something to build on. For the craft of the messages after that, see how to write better roleplay replies.
Questions people ask
Do I need an account to start?
No. You can send your first messages to any house character without an account, then make a free one to keep going.
What if the character replies in a way I did not want?
Tap Another version under the reply for a fresh take, or edit your own message and send it again. Neither costs you the story.
Can I start in my own language?
Yes. Characters reply in the language you write in. Read-aloud voices are English only.
