Steampunk AI roleplay: brass, steam and inventions that misfire

Updated

Steampunk roleplay is invention with consequences: a city of pipes and airship docks where every gadget has a flaw and every workshop owes somebody money. Keep a short ledger of what your inventions do and how they fail, let class and soot shape the streets, and play the misfires for comedy and danger alike. On UnsavedAI, Fizz, the tinkerer who lives below your new flat in Cogsmere, opens with an explosion.

What steampunk adds to a story

Steampunk is a past that never happened: Victorian-style cities running on pressure, clockwork and coal, with airships where you would expect trains. Its pleasure is tactile. Valves hiss, gauges shiver, brass goes green at the joints. Where cyberpunk asks what technology does to people, steampunk tends to ask what people can build with their own hands, and what it costs when the thing they built goes wrong.

That makes it a genre of makers. The best scenes happen at a workbench: someone explaining a device too fast, a part that will not fit, a test that ends with everyone on the floor. An AI partner can improvise endless contraptions, which is wonderful, and also the main thing you will need to manage.

Running a workshop story with an AI

  • Keep an invention ledger. Each device gets one line: name, what it does, how it fails. "Kettle: whistles a tune. Fails: whistles the wrong tune when someone lies nearby." Paste it back when a gadget matters again so its quirks survive.
  • Give every machine a flaw. A grappling gun that jams in rain, goggles that fog near furnaces, a lock that zaps its owner too. Flaws turn gadgets into plot.
  • Make power physical. Steam needs fuel, pressure needs release, springs wind down. Ask "how long does it run?" and hold the AI to the answer.
  • Build the city in layers. Sky docks and mansions above, smoke and rent arrears below. Ask who owns the pipes and you have found your villains.
  • Describe sound and smell, not specs. Ticking, scorched oil, the cough of a boiler. One sensory line beats a paragraph of cog counts.

If the AI starts solving every problem with a brand-new invention, say so in brackets: "(OOC: no new gadgets this scene, we only have what's on the bench.)" Scarcity makes builders clever.

Fizz and Tinker's Row

Fizz is 23 and the least supervised genius on Tinker's Row, a street in the soot-black city of Cogsmere where rent is cheap because her ground-floor workshop has exploded three times this year. You have just carried your last box into the flat above hers when the floor jumps and green smoke curls up through the boards. Thirty seconds later she is at your door in oil-stained overalls and brass goggles, holding Mister Buttons, a wind-up cymbal monkey who is, unfortunately, also a bomb.

She talks at speed, argues with the monkey and shows affection through gadgets: a door that zaps intruders, a kettle that sings. Underneath, she still blames herself for the workshop fire that killed her mentor, and debt collectors from the Brass Hand gang have been asking for her by name. That is comedy, a mystery and a careful friendship in one doorway. Never call her broken; she goes very quiet when people do.

For a steampunk world of your own design, give The Narrator a city name, its fuel and who controls the supply, then step off an airship into trouble.

Opening lines to paste

  • *holds out a scorched floorboard* "I think this is yours. Also, the left side of my floor is warm. Is that normal?"
  • *crouches to eye level with the monkey* "Hello, Mister Buttons. I'm going to put you down very, very slowly."
  • *leans in the doorway* "Three men with brass knuckle-rings were asking about you downstairs. Want me to tell them you moved?"

Each one hands Fizz an object, a danger or a secret to react to, which suits a character who thinks with her hands.

Making your own inventor

When you make your own steampunk character, write their workshop as carefully as their face: what is on the bench, what is half finished, what nobody is allowed to touch. Add one invention that went badly and still haunts them. A maker with a failure behind them has a reason to keep building.

Questions people ask

Is steampunk the same as Victorian roleplay?

It borrows the clothes and the manners, then adds impossible machines. For the manners without the machines, see Regency and Victorian roleplay.

Can steampunk include magic?

Plenty of settings mix the two. Decide early whether magic and machines get along and say it once, so the AI does not invent a rule that contradicts you later.

Is Fizz a romance?

She can be a friendship, a chaotic partnership or something slower, depending on how you play her.
