SillyTavern alternative when the setup is too much
Updated
SillyTavern is a free, open-source chat front end you install and run yourself, then connect to a model. If the install, updates and settings are more than you want, either keep SillyTavern and shrink the setup, or move to a hosted site that reads your cards. UnsavedAI runs in the browser and imports SillyTavern cards as PNG or JSON, so your characters come along.

"Setup" covers several different chores, and each has its own lighter route:
| What wears you out | Lighter route |
|---|---|
| Installing Node and git, or Termux on a phone | A browser-based site with nothing to install |
| Running a model on your own GPU | A hosted API, so SillyTavern stays and the model runs elsewhere |
| Prompts, presets and samplers | A ready-made preset, or a site where the prompt is already tuned |
| Updates that break things | A hosted site that updates itself |
| Playing on your phone | A web app you add to the home screen |
If it is only the GPU or the model, you may not need to leave at all: SillyTavern without a GPU covers that route.
Taking your characters with you
SillyTavern can export any character as a PNG or JSON card. On UnsavedAI, open /chat/custom and import the file: description, personality, scenario, first message, example dialogue and up to five alternate greetings come across, and a PNG card brings its picture.
What stays behind is everything SillyTavern adds around the card:
- World Info and lorebooks, including one embedded in a card.
- Group chats, and your chat history.
- Extensions, Quick Replies and regex scripts.
- Your presets, prompt order and persona.
For a story in progress, write a short recap and paste the last few exchanges into the new chat. That restarts a story far better than trying to move a whole log.
What you give up, honestly
SillyTavern is popular because it hands you every lever. A hosted site trades most of them for a quicker start. You lose fine control of the prompt, local models, group chats where several cards take turns, extensions such as expressions and vector memory, and the freedom to point a character at any model you like. If you use those every session, a simpler site will feel cramped within a week.
What you get back is time: no terminal, no update day, no guessing which of six settings caused a bad reply. Characters on UnsavedAI run with a roleplay prompt already tuned for its models and about 61,000 tokens of context, without you touching a slider. To feel the difference, open Mara Vell, a sharp-tongued innkeeper with a secret, and send a first line; there is nothing to configure.
Or keep both
Plenty of people keep SillyTavern on the desktop for heavy campaigns and use a browser site on the phone. One account covers both: a key from /setup works in SillyTavern with gemma-4-12b, and the setup page also offers a SillyTavern preset file tuned for those models, so even the settings chore shrinks. One AI account across apps shows how the two sides fit.
And if a card needs to go the other way later, characters you made or imported can leave UnsavedAI as Character Card V2, which SillyTavern imports directly.
Questions people ask
Is there a SillyTavern alternative for phones with nothing to install?
A browser-based character site works. UnsavedAI runs in any mobile browser, can be added to the home screen, and imports SillyTavern cards.
Can I import my SillyTavern chats?
No, chat logs do not import. Start a new story with a short recap and the last few exchanges instead.
Do my lorebooks come along?
No. Move the few facts a character truly needs into its Who they are field.
