Rehearse a hard conversation with AI roleplay

Updated

Describe the other person and their likely objections, ask the AI to play them realistically, and run the conversation several times: once to find your words, once against a tougher version, once to practise staying steady. It is confidence practice, not therapy or a substitute for professional help. On UnsavedAI, the Narrator can play anyone, and Start your own way sets up the scene.

What rehearsal can and cannot do

Saying something difficult out loud for the first time is the hardest part. Rehearsing lets that first time happen somewhere safe: you find the sentence that says what you mean, hear the objections you are dreading, and notice where you start to over-explain.

It cannot predict the real person. The AI only knows what you tell it, so treat each run as one possible version of the talk, not a forecast. And it is not therapy. If the conversation is about your safety, or you are in crisis, contact local emergency services or a crisis line, or talk to a professional you trust. Rehearsal is for confidence, not for carrying something that heavy alone.

Set up the other person

The Narrator can play anyone. Choose Start your own way (⋯ menu) and give it a short brief: who they are, what they want, and what they are likely to say.

"Play my manager, Dana. She likes my work, but the budget is tight and she hates being surprised. Push back with real objections: timing, budget, 'let's revisit in six months.' Don't agree unless I make a good case."

Ask for realism, not villainy. A brief that says "she is difficult" gets a cartoon; one that lists her real pressures gets the conversation you will actually have.

Example: asking for a raise

First attempt: "Sorry to bother you, I was just wondering if maybe there's any chance of a raise at some point?"

Rehearsed: "I'd like to talk about my pay. Since March I've taken over vendor contracts and cut our turnaround from five days to two. I'm asking for an increase that reflects that."

Dana pushes back: "The budget is set until January." The rehearsed answer stays calm and asks for something concrete: "Understood. What would need to be true for this to happen in January, and can we write that down today?"

For a tougher run, Adrian Vale is a demanding CEO who answers feelings with logistics; ask him for a raise as his assistant and you will hear "why" more than once.

Example: a boundary with a friend

Boundaries are hard because the other person is someone you like. Set the scene with a friend character, such as Nadia Brooks, who has known you forever, or brief the Narrator on your real friend's habits.

Over-explained: "I'm really sorry, it's just that things are a bit tight and I don't want you to think I don't care, but maybe I can't lend money for a while, if that's okay?"

Clear: "I care about you, and I'm not going to lend money anymore. That's not about you. I'm happy to help in other ways."

Then rehearse their reply, especially the guilt-trip version, and practise not reopening the decision.

Replay it, then debrief

Another version is the most useful button here: send the same line and reroll the reply to hear four different reactions. Undo last message lets you try a better wording of your own. New journey (⋯ menu, signed in) starts the whole conversation over clean.

When you are done, step outside the scene: (OOC: stop the roleplay. Where did I sound unsure? Suggest two lines I could say more clearly.) Write down the three sentences you most want to say, close the chat, and go have the real conversation.

Questions people ask

Is this a kind of therapy?

No. It is practice for finding your words and staying calm. For anything involving your health, safety or a crisis, please reach out to a professional, a crisis line or local emergency services.

Is my rehearsal private?

Each story can be saved to your account or kept Unsaved, and we don't read or screen conversations.

What if the AI is much nicer than the real person?

Tell it: (OOC: be more defensive; she interrupts and changes the subject.) Then reroll until you hear the version you are worried about.
