How to move a Character.AI character to another site
Updated
Open your character on Character.AI, copy its name, greeting and definition, and paste them into the UnsavedAI import page. The character starts with the same opening and personality, and you can export it later as a Character Card V2 file for SillyTavern or as text for JanitorAI.

- Name: exactly as you want it to appear in the chat.
- Greeting: the first message the character sends. This sets the tone more than anything else.
- Definition: the long description and any example dialogue. If yours is hidden or empty, a few sentences about looks, voice and what the character wants is enough to start.
- A picture, if you have one. It is optional.
For characters you made, the edit screen on Character.AI shows the greeting and definition. For someone else's character, copy the greeting and write down what you know about them. Only bring characters you made, or ones whose creators are happy for them to be shared.
Paste and keep going
On the import page, paste the fields and start chatting. Example chats inside the definition are kept too, and they matter: they show the model how the character actually talks. Making a free account takes one step, and then you are in the chat with them.
The pasted character is kept in your browser rather than uploaded from that page. If a definition or greeting is longer than a character can hold, the page tells you before anything is shortened, so you can trim it yourself and choose what stays.
If the character feels slightly different, it is usually the definition. Add one or two lines of example dialogue in the voice you want and the model follows it closely.
Your old conversation
Chat history does not move automatically. The quickest way to continue a long story is to write a short summary of where things stand, three or four sentences, and send it as your first message. The character picks up from the summary.
A good recap names who is in the scene, where you are, what just happened and how the character feels about you right now. For example: "Recap: we escaped the manor last night, Eleanor's locket is in my coat, and she still has not forgiven me for lying about the letter. We are hiding in the boathouse at dawn."
Have a card file instead?
If you already moved the character to SillyTavern or found it on Chub, you do not need the paste form. Import the PNG or JSON card at make your own character and everything in the card comes with it.
Taking it elsewhere later
Characters you make here can be downloaded as a Character Card V2 JSON file, the format SillyTavern imports, or copied as text for JanitorAI. That way the character is yours, wherever you decide to play.
Questions people ask
Can I export my chat history from Character.AI?
Chat history does not carry over between services, so the reliable way to continue is a short recap: write three or four sentences on the story so far and send it as your first message.
What if my character definition is private?
If you cannot see the definition, describe the character in your own words: appearance, how they speak, what they want and how they feel about you. That is usually enough.
Is importing free?
Yes. Importing and chatting with your character works on the free lane.
