Free proxy for JanitorAI: options and how to spot a risky one

Updated

Free JanitorAI proxies come in four kinds: a provider's free tier, a free model on a key you make yourself, a model on your own computer, and links strangers share. The last is the risky one: whoever runs it can read every message, and if it asks for a key from another service they can use that key. Pick a named provider where you make your own revocable key, such as UnsavedAI's free gemma-4-12b.

What "free proxy" can mean

  • A provider's free tier: you make an account and a key on the provider's own site, and some models cost nothing.
  • A free model on your own key: the same idea, with a specific model offered at no charge.
  • A model on your own computer: free to run if your hardware can handle it, but exposing it to a browser-based site takes technical setup.
  • A shared link: a proxy address passed around in a server, thread or video, run by someone you do not know.

The first three put you in control of the key. The fourth puts a stranger between you and the model.

Why unknown proxies are risky

A proxy sees every message that passes through it: your story, your persona, anything personal you mention in character. A provider with a name, a site and a privacy policy has something to lose if it mishandles that. An anonymous link has nothing to lose.

It gets worse when a proxy asks you to paste a key from another service into it. That key is effectively a password to your account there. Whoever runs the proxy can copy it, use it for their own traffic, run up charges on a paid account or get the account banned for what they do with it. Pasting the key "just to try it" is enough.

Be especially wary of offers of premium commercial models, free, with no account. Running those models costs real money for every message. When nobody asks you for anything, ask who is paying; sometimes the honest answer is someone else's key that was never meant to be shared.

How to judge a proxy before trusting it

  • Who runs it? A named service with a website and a way to contact them, not just a URL in a comment.
  • Whose key is it? Good: you make an account and a key on their site. Bad: they ask for a key from a different provider.
  • Can you revoke your key? You should be able to kill it yourself at any time.
  • Is there a privacy policy that says what they keep? Read the part about logs.
  • Is the address stable, on their own domain over https? Tunnel addresses that change every few days are a warning sign.
  • Does the offer add up? Expensive models for free, unlimited, with no account, rarely do.
  • Did anyone ask for your password, email login or payment details for "verification"? Walk away.

If you already pasted a key somewhere sketchy

  • Go to the service that issued the key and revoke it now. A revoked key is useless to anyone holding a copy.
  • Check that account's usage or billing page for activity you do not recognise.
  • If you used the same password anywhere near that proxy, change it.
  • Make a fresh key, name it after the one app it is for, and use it only there.

On UnsavedAI, keys are made under Your keys after creating one at Setup, and revoking one stops it everywhere at once without touching your other keys. The JanitorAI connection guide shows where each value goes, and JLLM or a proxy helps if you are still deciding whether you need a proxy at all.

Questions people ask

Is there a completely free proxy for JanitorAI?

Yes, several providers offer free models on a key you make yourself. On UnsavedAI, a free account includes gemma-4-12b with no daily token cap.

Is it safe to use a proxy link someone posted?

Only if you can tell who runs it and they never ask for a key from another service. Assume an anonymous proxy can read everything you send.

Can a proxy steal my JanitorAI account?

A proxy only receives your messages and the key you gave it, not your JanitorAI password. The real risk is the provider key and the content of your chats.
