Character.AI bot disappeared? How to get your character back

Updated

When a favourite bot vanishes, you usually can't restore it from outside the app, but you can rebuild the character. Gather what you still have: its greeting, any definition you saved, screenshots and your memory of how it talked. Rebuild it at /from-character-ai or /chat/custom on UnsavedAI, add a few lines of dialogue in its voice, and keep a copy of the definition so it can't vanish again.

First, make sure it is really gone

Character.AI is a popular site for chatting with user-made AI characters, and a character there can stop showing up for reasons only the app or the creator can explain. Before rebuilding, rule out the simple causes:

  • Search for it by its exact name and by the creator's name.
  • Look through your list of recent chats, not just search results.
  • Try a different browser or device, signed in to the same account.
  • If the creator posts elsewhere, see whether they mention it.

If any old chat with it still opens, copy the conversation now before anything else changes; saving your Character.AI chats shows how.

Collect every scrap

Rebuilding is much easier with raw material. Look for:

  • The greeting. It is the first message of any chat with the character, so scroll to the top of one if you can.
  • The definition, if you made the character or copied it somewhere.
  • Screenshots of favourite replies. These show the voice better than any description.
  • Lines you remember word for word: catchphrases, pet names, the way they swore.
  • The scenario: who you were to them and where stories usually started.

Rebuild the definition from memory

You don't need the original text to get the character back, only enough for a model to find the voice. Write it in this order:

  • Name and one-line identity: "Wyn, a hedge witch who adopted you after you collapsed on her doorstep."
  • How they talk: "Short sentences, dry, calls everyone 'sprout', never says thank you."
  • What they want and hide: "Wants a quiet life; hides that the village is afraid of her for a reason."
  • How they feel about you: "Protective, pretends to be annoyed by it."
  • Three example lines in their voice, taken from your screenshots if you have them.

Example lines do more work than anything else, which is why writing example dialogue is worth a look before you start.

Where to rebuild it

If you have the greeting and definition as text, paste them with the name (and a picture if it is yours) at /from-character-ai. If you are writing it fresh, or you once saved it as a card file, use /chat/custom, which also imports SillyTavern and Chub cards as PNG or JSON. The rebuilt character won't be a perfect copy, since a different model writes it, but with good example lines most people find the voice comes back within a few replies.

If the bot was someone else's creation, a version you rebuild from memory for your own private stories is between you and it. Don't publish it for others as if it were yours; that belongs to its creator.

While you rebuild, house characters with a similar pull can fill the gap: Seraphina Nyx is a sweet, alarmingly devoted sorceress, Haru Sakamaki a bored, overpowered exorcist who has claimed you as his trainee, and Azrael a demon king you summoned who has decided to stay.

Questions people ask

Can I get my old chats with the bot back?

Only the app can restore those. If they are gone, write a short recap of where your story was and send it as the first message to the rebuilt character.

Will the rebuilt character sound the same?

Close, not identical. Example lines in its voice make the biggest difference, and editing the first few replies helps it settle.

Can I share my rebuilt version?

If you created the original, yes. If someone else did, keep it for your own stories and leave publishing to them.
