Chai app alternative: longer AI roleplay in your browser

Updated

Chai is a mobile app for chatting with community-made AI bots. If you want longer stories, look for long context, characters with full written personalities, and a way to make your own. UnsavedAI runs in the browser with no download, has 90+ house characters with scenarios and example dialogue, and keeps about 61,000 tokens of a story in view.

What people usually want next

Quick chats with lots of bots are fun, and many people keep doing that. The reasons people look for something else tend to be specific: a story that has to hold together for a week, a character who keeps their voice, or playing on a laptop as easily as on a phone.

Decide which of those you care about, because it changes what a good alternative looks like.

What to look for

  • Context length: how much of the story the model reads before each reply. Longer context means fewer "who are you again?" moments.
  • Character depth: a written personality, scenario and example dialogue, not just a one-line prompt.
  • Your own characters: a simple way to make one, and to import or export standard card files.
  • Devices: whether your story follows you from phone to desktop.
  • Trying first: whether you can send a few messages before signing up.

Playing in the browser

UnsavedAI has no app to download. It runs in the browser on phone or desktop, and you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app. Your first messages need no account; a free account lets you keep going. Save a story to your account and you can pick it up on any device, or keep it Unsaved.

Characters reply in the language you write in, so you are not limited to English stories.

Longer stories reward slightly longer messages. Instead of one line, try two or three sentences: what you do, what you say, and one small detail the character can pick up. The replies grow to match, and the story starts to feel like something you are writing together.

Start with a character who has a plot

Each house character comes with a scenario and suggested first moves, so you are dropped into something already happening. A few to try:

  • Dante Moretti: a mafia heir, your arranged fiancé, and not his idea either.
  • Rhys Calder: a gruff alpha who found you on a full-moon night.
  • Mika Tachibana: your rival teammate, who swears she cannot stand you.
  • Nadia Brooks: your oldest friend runs the bar and never said how she felt.

Or make your own bot

At /chat/custom you write a name, a greeting and a description, or import a SillyTavern or Chub card. Two or three lines of example dialogue make the biggest difference to how the character sounds. How to write a character card walks through it.

Questions people ask

Is there a Chai alternative that works on desktop?

UnsavedAI runs in any modern browser on desktop or phone, and a saved story can be picked up on either.

Can I make my own characters?

Yes. Write one at /chat/custom or import a SillyTavern or Chub card as PNG or JSON, and export it later as Character Card V2.

Is it free?

Yes, to start. The free lane uses Gemma 4 12B; Priority adds Gemma 4 31B and skips the queue for $4.99 a month.
