How to stop AI making everything romantic

Updated

AI turns stories romantic because romance is everywhere in the fiction it learned from, so any warmth between two characters looks like the start of a love story. Name the relationship up front ("strictly platonic partners"), edit out the first lingering look or blush, and keep a standing note so the rule outlasts the opening. On UnsavedAI, put it in Story memory, or start with a character written as a friend, mentor or rival.

The drift, step by step

It rarely jumps straight to a confession. It goes: a held gaze, a softened voice, a blush, a hand that stays a moment too long, "something unspoken between you". Each step looks small, and each one left in the chat makes the next more likely. Thirty messages later, your grizzled homicide partner is confessing feelings in the rain.

Why it happens

Romance is one of the biggest genres in published and fan fiction, so when two characters share a quiet moment, the likeliest continuation is a romantic one. Card wording adds to it: "charming", "protective", "devoted" and "intense" read as love-interest signals even when you meant loyalty. Roleplay itself leans romantic too; romance is the biggest shelf on UnsavedAI, and on most character sites.

Say what the relationship is, early

Models fill a blank relationship with the most common one, so fill it yourself in your first message or persona: "We're partners on the homicide squad, ten years in, like siblings who bicker." Then paste:

(OOC: this is a platonic story. No romance, flirting or attraction between our characters, now or later; keep the warmth as friendship or respect.)

"Now or later" matters. Without it, the model may read "no romance" as "no romance yet", which is a slow burn, a different story. If a slow burn is actually what you want, pacing a slow burn is the page for that.

Swap the tells as they appear

Romance tellPlatonic rewrite
*His gaze lingers on you a moment too long.**He glances at you, then back at the case board.*
*A faint blush colours her cheeks.**She snorts and shoves the file at you.*
"I'd be lost without you.""Don't get yourself killed. The paperwork's a nightmare."
*Something unspoken hangs between you.**Neither of you says anything. The kettle clicks off.*

Edit the first one you see. One blush left standing teaches more than three instructions, and closeness written as banter, respect or teasing gives the model a pattern other than romance to continue.

Per app, and characters built for it

In SillyTavern, add "The relationship between {{char}} and {{user}} is platonic; no romance" to the character's description or your Main Prompt, and check the card for words like "devoted" or "longing". In JanitorAI, the chat memory box or a proxy's custom prompt can hold the same line. On UnsavedAI, add it to Story memory (⋯ menu) so it stays in view after the opening scrolls away, and reroll any reply that drifts.

Starting with a character whose story is not a romance helps most. Ustad Rahim is a Karachi boxing coach who won't teach you to punch until you can stand. Bex is the best friend at your door at 2 a.m. with a goose and a plan. Detective Rosa Quinn wants a buried case dug up, and Percy Fairweather sold you a fake treasure map that turned out to be real.

Questions people ask

I said no romance and it still flirts. Why?

Usually an earlier reply with a romantic beat is still in view, or the card describes the character as a love interest. Fix those first; the instruction works once the examples agree with it.

Can a story be close and emotional without romance?

Yes. Name the feeling you want: loyalty, rivalry, grief, found family. A specific feeling gives the model something other than romance to write toward.

Does this work with romance characters?

Partly. A character written as a love interest keeps pulling that way. For a platonic story, pick one whose card is built around friendship, mentoring or a job.
