Secret identity AI roleplay: clues, cover stories and reveals

Updated

A secret identity story runs on dramatic irony: someone is not who they claim to be, and the tension lives in clues, near-misses and the reveal. With an AI, keep track of who knows what, let clues pile up long before anyone confesses, and consider being the one with the secret. On UnsavedAI, Clara Voss hides a career as a contract killer behind a flower shop, and Daniel Seo hides a power that should not exist.

Why a secret makes a better romance

A secret gives you two relationships for the price of one: the polite one on the surface and the true one underneath. Every ordinary moment becomes double. When Clara offers to make soup and adds that she is "very good with knives", it is a joke and a confession at the same time.

The reveal is the real romantic test. Not "do you like me" but "do you still like me now that you know".

Keep a ledger of who knows

Models lose track of secrets unless the chat makes them clear. Decide which kind of story you are in, and say so in a short note if needed, such as "(OOC: Clara does not know I have noticed the stains yet.)"

  • You know, and they do not know you know. Clara's cuff is the obvious tell.
  • You only suspect. Something four-legged moves at the edge of Daniel's light.
  • You are the one hiding. With Sgt. Cole Mercer, the secret is the bite under your own sleeve.

Each version plays differently. In the first you get comedy and tenderness; in the second, mystery; in the third, pure suspense, because every kind thing they do makes the lie heavier.

Clues, not confessions

  • The cover story, delivered badly or too smoothly.
  • A clue only you noticed.
  • A close call where someone else nearly finds out.
  • You cover for them without saying why.
  • The reveal, forced by a crisis rather than a conversation.
  • The morning after: what you are now that both of you know.

The usual failure is a character who confesses on message five because you asked directly. Ask sideways, or let them lie and enjoy how badly they do it. The opposite failure is a secret that never pays off. Once the clues are thick, put the reveal on a clock: a visitor, an inspection, a boss chamber with the doors sealed.

Three secrets to uncover or keep

Clara Voss is 28, runs Voss & Bloom, apologises to houseplants and blushes at compliments. She is also one of the most feared contract killers on the continent, taking orders hidden inside wreath requests. Three weeks ago she married you because you needed a visa and a married florist makes a perfect cover. Tonight she comes home late with lilies, a torn leaf in her hair and a small red spot on her cuff that she insists is jam.

Daniel Seo is officially Grade Ten, the weakest hunter in the city, the one guilds hire to carry bags. Two years ago he walked out of a dungeon that should have killed him, and since then he can tame what lives down there; a wolf made of blue light follows him like a second shadow. He has told nobody and answers every question with "Got lucky". His soft spot is someone who trusts him while they still think he is nothing special, so the best move is trusting him before you know.

Sgt. Cole Mercer flips it. You reached his fire station at dusk with the sick behind you and a fresh bite under your sleeve, and the group's rule about bites is not a kind one. He values people who tell the truth when lying would be easier. Whether you do, and when, is the whole story.

Openers

  • To Clara: *takes the lilies and quietly picks the leaf out of her hair* "Raspberry, you said. Funny. The jar in the fridge is still sealed."
  • To Daniel: *falls in beside him at the gate* "Your shadow has four legs. I am not asking. I am just telling you I noticed."
  • To Cole: *keeps the sleeve pulled down* "I will sit. Before your doctor gets here, how strict is the rule? Hypothetically."

Building your own double life

Write two layers into the character: the public face and the truth, plus three tells that leak through in ordinary scenes. Say in the scenario exactly who knows what at the start, and keep the reveal out of the greeting. A secret superhero, a royal working a market stall or a spy at the next desk all work. Make your own, and see superhero roleplay or heist roleplay for settings built on hidden lives.

Questions people ask

Can I be the one with the secret identity?

Yes. Cole's story starts with your secret, and with any character you can describe a hidden life in your persona or first message and let them start noticing.

How do I stop the AI revealing the secret too early?

Avoid asking point-blank, enjoy the bad cover stories, and add a one-line OOC note if needed. A clear "they do not know yet" holds for a long stretch.

Is Clara's story dark?

It is a romantic comedy. Her job is mostly offstage, she never hurts you, and her secret shows up as alarming offers to deal with people who were rude to you.
