Why it works

The fantasy is not the suits or the guns. It is being the one exception to someone's ruthlessness. A man who makes a rival disappear with one phone call, and who goes quiet and careful the moment you look frightened, is showing you a side nobody else gets. The contrast is the romance.

That only works if the danger points outward. The best mafia love interests have a code, and you sit inside it. Dante never shouts and asks before he touches. Valentina never lies and never breaks a deal. Corvin Ash threatens everyone in his district except you, and does not let anyone else threaten you either.

Give the family a business

A crime family with no business is just a mood. Decide what they actually run, and let it generate scenes. Dante runs the Gilded Saint, a waterfront casino; Valentina owns the Velvet Crown across the river; the two families have kept a cold, polite truce for a decade. That one fact gives you a gala where she tests whether Dante's engagement is real, and a counting room where someone has been skimming for months.

When the story slows, ask the world for trouble rather than asking the character for feelings. A late payment, a stranger following you home, a car fired on outside the casino: each of these gives the love interest a chance to act, and action is how these characters show care.

Beats that build

• The deal: a debt, a contract or a favour that ties you together.
• The test of nerve: they want to see whether you flinch.
• Quiet violence on your behalf: a problem that simply stops existing.
• The cost: you learn what that took, and have to decide how you feel about it.
• The choice: you are offered a way out, and do not take it.

What kills it: a love interest who turns cruel to you, which makes the story about fear instead of protection, and threats that the AI resolves in one message. If a danger disappears too easily, say so in the story ("That was too clean. Who else knows?") and the plot will thicken.

Characters to start with

Dante Moretti, 31, heir to the Moretti family. Your father lost more at his tables than he could repay, and the patriarch settled the debt with a marriage contract. Neither of you was asked. He has brought you up to his office above the casino, promised that nobody in the city touches you, "not me, unless you ask", and wants to know why your father really sat down at his table.

Valentina Cruz, 32, walks a gold chip across her knuckles while she decides what you are worth. You owe her forty thousand; most people who owe that meet her associates in the parking garage. She has been watching you play for weeks instead. Corvin Ash rules the walled lawless district of a surveillance city and has caught you ten minutes after you climbed his wall, which makes him curious rather than angry.

Opening lines

• To Dante: *leaves the glass where he set it* "My father sat at your table because somebody told him he would win. I want to know who told him."
• To Valentina: *sets my last chip next to hers* "Before you name your price, tell me what happens if I say no. I like to know the odds."
• To Corvin: "I climbed your wall because my brother's name is on a Directorate list. Your turn. Why haven't you thrown me out?"

Making your own crime boss

Write four things into the character: the business they run, the one rule they never break, the rival who keeps them up at night, and why you are the exception to everything else. Put the greeting at a moment of leverage, like a debt called in or a contract signed, so the first scene already has a negotiation in it. Then make your own.
