ChatGPT roleplay feels flat? What a character app adds
Updated
ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI assistant, and assistants are shaped to be helpful, balanced and clear, which are the wrong instincts for a character in a story. Replies drift toward summaries, menus of options and quick resolutions. A character app adds a written personality, a scenario, example dialogue and a roleplay prompt read on every turn. UnsavedAI gives every house character all of those.

Say you write: "I finally find you on the roof. You've been avoiding me for three days."
An assistant-style reply tends to look like this: "That sounds like a tense moment! Your character might be feeling hurt. The other character could apologise, explain they were scared, or change the subject. Which direction would you like to take?"
A reply from a character with a card and a scenario: *Kat doesn't turn around. She's sitting on the ledge, boots over the drop, a stolen pair of earrings catching the light in her palm.* "Three days. You counted. That's sweet." *She finally looks at you.* "Did you come to drag me back, or to help me fence these?"
The second stays in the scene, has its own agenda, and hands you a choice inside the story instead of a menu outside it.
Why assistants drift out of character
This is not a flaw in a general assistant; it is what one is built for. The habits that make it good at email and homework are the ones that flatten a story:
- Helpful means offering options, so it steps outside the scene to ask what you want.
- Balanced means smoothing conflict, so arguments resolve within a reply.
- Clear means summarising, so it tells you what a character feels instead of showing it.
- Agreeable means saying yes, so nothing in the story pushes back.
What a character setup adds
| Piece | What it does in the story |
|---|---|
| Description | Who the character is, read before every reply |
| Personality and voice | How they talk, so they never slide into a neutral tone |
| Scenario | Where the story starts and what is at stake |
| First message | Opens the scene, so you react instead of explaining |
| Example dialogue | Shows the voice; models copy style from it more than from description |
| Roleplay prompt | Stay in character, never write for you, vary the wording |
On UnsavedAI, every house character comes with all of these written in, plus suggested first moves, and stories keep about 61,000 tokens in view. You can try one without an account: Kat Rourke stole what you guard and now wants a partner, and Loki needs an accomplice and has decided you will do.
If you'd rather stay with an assistant
You can get a good part of the way with a setup message at the start of a fresh conversation. Paste it and fill in the brackets:
"Let's write an interactive story. You play [name], [two lines on who they are and what they want]. I play [my character]. Rules: stay in character at all times; never write my character's actions, words or feelings; no summaries, no lists, no offering me options; keep replies to two or three paragraphs; let [name] disagree with me, keep secrets and want things I don't. Anything I write in brackets is me speaking outside the story. Begin with [name] in [opening scene]."
Expect to restate the key rules every so often as the conversation grows. That upkeep is exactly the work a character card does for you. How to keep AI characters in character has fixes that work anywhere.
Questions people ask
Is ChatGPT bad at roleplay?
It can roleplay, but its defaults are tuned for being a helpful assistant. Without a strong setup, stories tend to drift toward summaries and quick resolutions.
What makes an AI good at roleplay?
A character definition read every turn, example dialogue in their voice, a scenario with stakes, and enough context to remember the story. The model matters too; see what a roleplay model is.
Can I bring a character I built in an assistant chat?
Yes. Copy the description and opening scene into a new character at /chat/custom, and add two or three example lines in their voice.
