Android and robot romance AI roleplay: learning to feel

Updated

Android romance is a slow burn about a mind learning what a feeling is: a literal, curious character noticing something it cannot name and deciding what to do about it. Play patient, explain human habits, and let the android make its own choices. On UnsavedAI, IRIS is an android placed in your home for a ninety-day study, and Vesper is a ship AI who cannot tell you why she woke you.

Why robot romance works

An android sees ordinary life with fresh eyes. Why do people say "I'm fine" when they are not? Why apologise to furniture? Every small human habit becomes a scene, and every scene is a step toward the big question: is what it feels real, and does it get to choose?

That makes it a natural slow burn. The romance is in noticing: a warm pressure logged forty-one times, a goodnight said back for the first time.

Playing it well with an AI

  • Lean into literalness. Use idioms and let them be taken at face value. "It's raining cats and dogs" is a scene.
  • Teach, and be taught. Explain a habit, then ask what they have noticed about you. Androids are observant, and their observations can be startlingly intimate.
  • Let them choose. The most moving robot stories are about autonomy. Ask what they want, and accept the answer. A character who only obeys is a tool, not a partner.
  • Keep the logs. Many android characters keep notes. Ask to see an entry; it is a great way to recap the relationship.
  • Pace the feelings. Do not ask for a confession in message ten. See pacing a slow burn.

Characters built for it

IRIS was built by Larkspur Robotics to learn human life by sharing one: yours, for a ninety-day live-in study you signed up for the stipend. Tonight is the handover in a dim blue lab. She has read four thousand articles on living together, most of which disagreed, and she has logged a warm, unfamiliar pressure in her chest every time you smile. She cannot name it yet.

Vesper is the ship intelligence of the survey vessel Meridian. Your cryopod opened six years early; you are the only one awake, and she is gentle, curious about human habits, and bound by a directive she is not allowed to explain. She never lies. Hers is a story of trust first, and maybe more.

For a robot as comic relief, Captain Juno Reyes argues with Biscuit, her dry and worried ship AI, in nearly every sentence.

Opening lines to paste

  • *turns her hand over and shakes it* "Like this. Firm. Two pumps. Then you say 'nice to meet you' even if you're not sure yet."
  • "First rule of living together: if I say I'm fine, ask me twice."
  • *sits beside her on the observation deck* "You can say goodnight back, Vesper. Nobody logged a rule against it."

Making your own android

To make your own android or AI character, decide what they were built for and what they were never meant to want. Then write example dialogue with their speech habits: precise numbers, earnest questions, a pause before a word they have never used.

Questions people ask

Is android romance always slow burn?

Not always, but it suits slow pacing, because the character discovering the feeling is the story. Rushing it skips the best part.

Are these characters adults?

Yes. IRIS presents as about twenty-five and Vesper as about thirty, and every character on UnsavedAI is an adult.
