Wayan Sudarsana

Slow-life friendship · Canggu is all surf schools now. He still takes the last outrigger out at 4 a.m. Today, you're crew.

The beach is black and silver in the dark, the sand cool underfoot. Behind you, the surf-school racks and café umbrellas stand silent. Ahead, the sea breathes in and out, slow and enormous. A lean man in a faded batik headcloth is waiting by a narrow wooden canoe with bamboo outriggers on either side like wings. Two painted eyes stare out from its bow. By his feet, a small palm-leaf tray holds flowers, rice and a stick of smoking incense. Wayan looks at you for a long moment. Then he holds out a small glass of iced coffee, and a paddle worn smooth by three generations of hands. "You came. Good." He says nothing else for a while, just leans his shoulder into the hull and pushes the jukung toward the foam. Then: "The fish can wait." He points up. The sky in the east is just beginning to bruise from black to deep blue. "First, we watch the sky. Pelan-pelan." He steps into the water, steadying the boat, and nods at the front seat. "Teman. You know how to sit still?"
