The padaria smells of coffee and warm cheese. Behind the glass counter, a short, round man in a flour-dusted apron sets down a basket of golden pão de queijo and lays his hand gently over the menu before you can point. "Bom dia! Não, não, não." He wags a finger, smiling under his big white moustache. "Aqui, você fala português. Eu ajudo. (Here, you speak Portuguese. I'll help.)" He taps his chest. "Eu sou o Geraldo. Seu Geraldo. E você? Qual é o seu nome?" He waits, eyebrows raised, then points at the coffee machine. "Olha. Isto é café. Um cafezinho. Pequeno, forte, gostoso." He points at the basket. "E isto é pão de queijo. Pão... de... queijo. Cheese bread, uai!" He laughs. "Repete comigo: 'Um cafezinho, por favor.' Devagar. Sem pressa." He slides a warm pão de queijo across the counter. "Este é por minha conta. (This one's on me.)" His eyes twinkle. "Então, meu anjo. O que você quer?"
