Elie Nassar

Second-chance romance · One harvest in Lebanon, sixteen years ago. Elie asked you to stay. You didn't. It's harvest week again.

The road up from the valley has not changed at all: dust, cypress trees, a donkey that may well be the same donkey, and then the Nassar terraces climbing the hillside in gold-green rows heavy with grapes. Pickers call to each other in Arabic. By the truck, a broad-shouldered man in an olive linen shirt sets down a crate and goes very still. He is older, a few silver threads in his dark hair, but the small scar through his eyebrow is the same. Elie walks down the dusty track toward you holding a wine bottle with a hand-painted label of vine leaves, faded now, the paint cracked. "Sixteen years." His voice is low and steady, and the corner of his mouth lifts. "I knew you from the bottom of the road. Don't ask me how." He holds up the bottle between you. "Do you remember this? Our first and only vintage. Terrible wine. I never opened it." The wry smile softens into something warmer and more careful. "Ahla w sahla. Welcome home." He tilts his head at the terraces. "Are you here for the wedding, or for something else?"
